Dick Van Dyke biography

Richard Wayne Van Dyke was born on 13th December 1925 in West Plains, Missouri, USA. He is the son of Hazel Victoria (mother) and Loren Wayne Van Dyke (father). His father was a salesman, while his mother was a stenographer.

He was raised in Danville, Illinois, alongside his elder brother Jerry Van Dyke. Jerry was an American actor, musician and comedian. He was born on 27th July 1931 and passed away on 5th January 2018 at his Hot Spring County, Arkansas ranch from heart failure.

The actor is Dutch and has English, Irish and Scottish ancestry. His family lineage traces back to the Mayflower passenger, John Alden. He attended the Danville High School, but there are no details about his higher education.

Career

In 1944, he left high school during his senior year and joined the United States Army Air Forces for pilot training. He was denied enlistment on several occasions because he was underweight. Eventually, he was accepted for service as a radio announcer.

During the late 1940s, after his military service, Dick worked as a radio DJ in Danville, Illinois. In 1947 he teamed up with Phil Erickson to form a comedy duo titled Eric and Van-the Merry Mutes. The duo toured West Coast Nightclub circuit. They also performed at several TV shows.

In 1959, he made his Broadway debut in The Girls Against the Boys. He was the lead actor in Broadway, Bye Bye Birdie. It started on 14th April 1960 and came to an end on 7th October 1961. Later, he appeared in another Broadway, Revival the Music Man.

Van Dyke began his TV career with WDSU-TV New Orleans Channel 6, with his first performance happening in 1964 with Dennis James. He worked with The New Dick Van Dyke Show from 1971 to 1974.
